Royal College of Surgeons of London

The Barber-Surgeons’ Company of London was incorporated in 1540. The company had powers relating to the education, conduct and licensure of surgeons.

Public assistance committees (PACs)

The Local Government Act 1929 sought to reform the administration of poor relief by transferring the responsibility to care for the poor to local authority public assistance committees (PACs).

Sanitary authority, Rural sanitary authority and Urban sanitary authority

The Public Health Act 1872 established sanitary authorities in both urban and rural areas, which were to provide public health services and appoint medical officers of health.

Public Health England (PHE)

Public Health England (PHE) was created as an executive agency of the Department of Health and began operating on 1 April 2013.

The local safeguarding adults board (SAB) is a multi-agency partnership responsible for leading the strategic and operational safeguarding adults work within each local authority area.
