Monitor's intervention at Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (BTHFT)

In October 2004, Monitor initiated a formal intervention at Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, following serious concerns relating to the trust's financial management capacity.

By November 2004, the trust was forecasting a loss of £11.3m for the financial year ending 31 March 2005, compared to the projected surplus of £2.3m.

Following its authorisation as a foundation trust, the organisation was aware that financial problems were developing, but Monitor deemed the initial response by the board to be insufficient. Monitor issued a notice in December 2004, which replaced the chairman of the trust with immediate effect.
