Registered Homes Act 1984

The Registered Homes Act 1984 received royal assent on 26 June 1984.

The Act consolidated legislation relating to residential care homes and nursing homes. The Act required providers of residential accommodation for persons in need of personal care (by reason of old age, disablement, drug or alcohol dependence or mental disorder) to be registered with the local social services authority.

Registration was not required for:

  • providers of services for fewer than four people
  • establishments used solely for nursing or mental health nursing
  • NHS organisations or establishments managed or provided by a local authority
  • a government department or any organisation constituted by an Act of Parliament or incorporated by Royal Charter.
