Healthy new towns

Speaking at the Local Government Association conference, NHS England Chief Executive Simon Stevens set out plans to put health at the heart of new neighbourhoods and towns.

Stevens suggested that the NHS wanted to work with local councils and others to develop new town partnerships that put innovative health and social care practice at the heart of urban planning.

NHS England and Public Health England invited local authorities, housing associations and the construction sector to identify development projects where the NHS could support the creation of health-promoting new towns and neighbourhoods in England. Initially, up to five projects would be selected.
