'Independent Living' strategy

The Independent Living strategy was published as a 5-year cross-government programme to deliver the government's commitment to improve the life chances and experiences of disabled people.

The aims of the strategy were to realise a vision whereby:

  • disabled people who needed support were assisted to live their lives with greater choice and control over the support they received
  • disabled people would have better access to housing, transport, health, employment, education and leisure opportunities and participate in family and community life.
